in oman, today marks the first day of eid al-fitr, the end of the holy month of ramadan. it is a time for celebration and families and friends gather many times over the next 3 official days of the holiday (although the public holiday started yesterday, when eid started in other countries, and will continue until sunday). it also marks the day when the ex-pats rejoice and can eat in public during the daytime once again!
not more than 10 minutes ago, my garishly loud doorbell ('as-salaamu 3alaykum! please open the door!') rang, and i peeped through the peephole to see little kummas floating about. i opened the door to find 4 neighbourhood boys with big bright smiles and an enthusiastic 'eid mubarak!' they were going around door to door for eid money (kind of like trick-or-treating), and i happily obliged and gave them about 300 baisa each. they looked so dapper with their crisp new dishdashas and new kummas (everyone gets new clothes for eid), and i suppose they'll spend their collected money on sweets and other goodies in the coming days ...
definitely put a smile on my face! time for the beach ...
